The Homemade T-Shirt that Nearly Defeated Me

Gosh! This week, while working on my homemade t-shirt, via the Style Ark pattern, I ran into several obstacles that almost made me abandon the project entirely.

Before starting,  I did what most people do: I watched a few tutorials on Youtube to understand the basics of sewing a t-shirt. From what I saw, the process looked fairly straightforward.

Simple, even.

But reality had other plans.

What surprised me the most was how tedious sewing the collar actually was. Attaching a stretched strip of jersey to the neckline requires a surprising amount of precision and patience. Being the impatient person that I sometimes am, I skipped a few steps I shouldn’t have, such as securing the collar with a straight stitch before moving to the serger. And when you’re not fully comfortable with a serger, especially while working with a fabric that loves to stretch and move, things can go sideways quickly.

And they did.

One crucial rule when sewing a collar is that you should only stretch the collar band, not the neckline of the shirt itself. If you stretch both at same time, you create what I’ll politely call a “beautiful wave” effect around the neck. In other words: a mistake.

The correct method is to keep the shirt neckline stable while gradually easing the stretched collar band onto it. One part stays fixed, and the other other is guided in slowly.

Of course, I learned that lesson the hard way.

What drew me to making a t-shirt out of jersey is that its a fabric that is worn by everyone. It’s democratic. People gravitates towards jersey when they want comfort. We often take the basic t-shirt design for granted, because we see everywhere. It’s one of the most universal fabrics in everyday life. And yet, sewing it properly requires a certain attention, patience, and respect for how the fabric behaves.

That tension between simplicity and technical nuance, is exactly what makes it so interesting.

And that’s exactly what I’m trying to understand and learn about this material. Jersey is such a versatile fabric, loved by so many of us, and I want to explore its character, its possibilities, its fundamental structure.

So I made a decision.

I would make the shirt again.

Same fabric. Same pattern.

But this time, I would do it properly.

* It made me wonder: what simple object has unexpectedly taught you something new about patience or craft?
